"Time spent with Shure is worth every Penny"
Pilates Playground is unique in that the studio specializes in teaching clients who have osteopenia and osteoporosis. Owner, Penny Shure who runs the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Albany, NY Support Group is passionate about teaching everyone about the exercise and lifestyle modifications that must be put into place in order to improve bone health and reduce fracture risk. All of Penny’s students have improved their posture, balance and core strength. Many have seen their bone density scores improve with these exercises being the only change they have added to their daily routines. Penny has combined the classical Pilates method with the work of Sara Meeks, PT to focus on strengthening the erector spinae muscles that support the backbone. Exercises are gentle and safe for all ages and fitness levels. Penny served on the American Institute of Biological Sciences Peer Review Panel for Osteoporosis and Bone Related Illnesses this summer in Washington, DC. “It was a wonderful experience to be a part of the solution on a bigger scale. The government is funding a tremendous amount of disease research and I was able to give the researchers a human face for osteoporosis. It helped for them to be able to see things from a patient’s perspective. It also helped me to learn more about what is going on with science.” “The exciting part of what I do is seeing everyone leave the studio standing taller and feeling better than they did when they arrived. These exercises are not only highly effective, they are very empowering! Many of my clients come in fearful and confused with their diagnosis. Some are unaware of which exercises are not only contraindicated but can actually cause fractures. We learn how to strengthen our bones, our cores, our spirits, and go about the general activities of daily living carefully.” Local physicians and chiropractors refer many patients to Shure’s studio. She is currently writing a “how to” book and has developed a series of songs geared to young children that will hopefully help teach core awareness and postural alignment as easy as learning the alphabet. Penny believes that if the correct movement habits are taught in childhood than it will prevent chronic compensations from occurring later in life.

Dr John Neustadt reports that the best evidence-based medical research points to the powerful role vitamin K2 (MK-4) can play in reducing fractures. The only dietary supplement that contains the form and amount of this nutrient is Osteo-K. Read more on his website

Press Release Re: Consumer Participation on Scientific Peer Review Panels
For Immediate Release
SCIENTIFIC PEER REVIEW OF RESEARCH APPLICATIONS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
Osteoporosis advocate and Pilates Playground owner, Penny Shure, recently participated in the evaluation of research proposals submitted to the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) sponsored by the Department of Defense. Penny Shure was nominated for participation in the peer review process by the National Osteoporosis Foundation, Washington, DC. Penny runs the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Albany, NY support group through her Pilates Playground exercise studio located at 18 Drywall Lane in Voorheesville. The studio specializes in safe exercises and lifestyle modifications for people with osteopenia and osteoporosis. As a consumer reviewer, she was a full voting member of the scientific peer review panel, along with prominent scientists and clinicians. The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) PRMRP received a $50 million congressional appropriation to fund research across 19 topic areas including Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases.
Consumer reviewers are asked to represent the collective view of their community including survivors and patients, family members, and persons at risk for the disease. Specifically, they are asked to score and comment on the potential impact of the proposed study on issues such as disease prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life after treatment. Penny Shurewas one of 65 consumer advocates who participated in the scientific peer review of applications submitted to the FY09 PRMRP and participated in the review of each research application on the panel. Commenting on her role as a consumer reviewer, Shure said that “The experience exceeded all of my expectations. I was honored to represent my community, my students and everyone who is affected by this silent disease. It was a tremendous feeling to be part of something bigger than myself. I was impressed by the amount of research going on in the United States and comforted to know how important finding a cure is to our government. This was the first time that consumer reviewers were a part of this panel and it was clear that our comments were appreciated. They ARE listening!”
Consumer advocates and scientists have worked together in this unique partnership to evaluate the scientific merit of research proposals submitted to the various programs managed through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) since 1995. Captain E. Melissa Kaime, M.D., Director of the CDMRP, expressed her appreciation for the consumer advocates’ perspective in the scientific peer review sessions. “The Consumer Reviewers on each panel helped the scientists understand the patient’s perspective and provided valuable insight into the potential impact of the proposed project. Likewise, these important members of the peer review panels have been enriched by learning more about the scientific process through discussing proposals with the other peer review panel members and seeing the future possibilities of successful research outcomes.”
The FY09 PRMRP challenged the scientific and clinical communities to address one of the FY09 congressionally-directed topic areas with original ideas that foster new directions in basic science and translational research; novel product development leading to improved therapeutic or diagnostic tools, or improvements in clinical policies/guidelines; or clinical trials that address an immediate clinical need. This program sought applications in laboratory, clinical, behavioral, and epidemiologic research as well as public health and policy; environmental sciences; nursing; occupational health; alternative therapies; ethics; economics; and strategic research, such as studies designed to shape the development of or to validate clinical policy or guidance.
